What changes your window cost
Two homes on the same street can receive very different quotes for what looks like the same job. These are the window cost factors that move the number most, so you can understand your own quote and compare like for like.
The six factors that matter most
1. Frame material
uPVC is usually the most affordable; aluminium sits higher for its slim sightlines and strength, and timber commands a premium for its appearance and upkeep. The same opening in three materials can produce three quite different prices.
2. Size and style
Larger openings, bays, sashes and shaped heads all use more material and labour than a standard casement. A plain window is always the cheapest starting point.
3. Glazing specification
Double versus triple glazing, low-emissivity coatings, and acoustic or toughened glass each nudge the price. Better glass can improve comfort and, according to the Energy Saving Trust, well-fitted efficient glazing can help reduce heat loss.
4. Colour and finish
Woodgrain foils, dual colours and flush-fit designs typically carry a modest premium over standard white.
5. Access and fitting
Upper floors, scaffolding, awkward access and the amount of making good all add to the fitting side of a quote — see our window installation cost guide.
6. Quantity
Whole-house jobs usually earn a better per-window rate than replacing one or two windows on their own, because the set-up cost is spread across more units.

The best value rarely comes from the lowest headline price; it comes from comparing like-for-like quotes on the same specification and choosing a reputable, accredited installer. It is also worth exploring ways to get quality windows for less before you commit, such as timing a whole-house job together or choosing a sensible glazing spec rather than the most expensive one.
Once you understand these factors, put them to work: check any quote against our uPVC window cost estimates and convert it to a cost per window to compare fairly.
